Assisted Living

A balance of independence and support for seniors

By Barbara Lambert President and Founder, In Senior Living Residential Options

Assisted living is often viewed as the best of both worlds. Residents have as much independence as they want with the knowledge that personal care and support services are available if they need them. A resident receives care in the privacy of their own apartment. Apartments can be studio, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom or 3-bedroom floor plans. These communities are designed to provide assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting, dressing, medication management and more. There are numerous life style opportunities in the Assisted Living community. You can enjoy a low-key down home experience all the way up to high-end amenities with concierge service.

Assisted Living communities typically provide a full-service cafeteria in a restaurant style environment. Some even have a lounge, complete with a bar. Many communities are staffed with activity directors that coordinate daily activities, both individual or group, as well as off-campus tours such as historical or wineries or ballroom dance classes. Many offer travel services to doctor appointments and some have a doctor come to the community so you never have to leave the campus. As you can see, there are numerous choices and price ranges to consider.

Plan for some quiet-time activities: Have a favorite DVD, CD, or record on hand for example. Be prepared with some simple repetitive activity to maintain calmness: cracking nuts, folding napkins, or shelling peas
