Senior Exploitation By a Family Member
Maria’s uncle was a victim of senior exploitation by a family member. Her uncle suffered from Dementia, cardiac and kidney disease. A cousin and her husband were the family members taking advantage of her uncle.
This cousin removed many items from her uncle’s home. Items of value. Her uncle’s ATM card was used often by her cousin to withdraw money from his account.
Social Services became involved. They advised Maria to contact Home2Home4Seniors for help. As a result, within days, Maria was able to move her uncle to assisted living. Therefore, he was safe. Safe from those trying to take advantage of him.
But, the following Sunday afternoon, Maria’s cousin showed up at the assisted living. She was demanding to take her uncle back to his home.
Maria requested to see the court order to remove her uncle. Of course, there was no court order. Consequently, her cousin left. She was unsuccessful in her attempt to take him back to his home.
In fact, weeks later the court awarded Maria guardianship over her uncle. He remained at the assisted living well cared for. Her uncle was safe. Unlike he was living before.
Unquestionably, older people are vulnerable. They are often targeted for financial exploitation. Senior exploitation by a family member. It happens more than we realize.
